What’s In A Name?
We are often asked where the name MommaGreen originated, and it is a story we love to tell, so we thought that we would share it here.
Growing up we were blessed with the most amazing Grandmothers, they were very different, each with their own strengths, but their strengths were many!
One of my Grandmothers was very efficient within the home, she “made” six beautiful children, lived in a house with an outback toilet, a gas water heater … you know the kind that you have to light with a match so that you can get hot water. She laughed or smiled almost every minute of her day and she was, quite possibly, the best cook on the planet. Her pasties were the stuff of legends and her scones were something you dream about on a Saturday night, knowing full well that hot scones would await you Sunday morning.
This Grandmother could crochet up a storm, we always had a special blanket from Nanna on our bed and whenever there was a birth in the family the traditional crocheted blanket would be given as the much awaited birth present. She managed to make the best out of every situation, how she did it we don’t really know and looking back now we wish that we had taken more notice.
My other Grandmother was tiny, tiny, tiny. Wow she was a powerhouse though, she was a feminist before the word ever really existed. Leaving a very unhappy marriage with three small children she returned to a small country town to begin a career in office management. She worked to support her children, to provide them with a home, to buy a new car, to put them through school. Promises of the elusive child support money never eventuated and her children remained without a father for the rest of their lives. This Grandmother was their mother, father, provider, confident and role model which was a huge achievement in that era.
These Grandmother’s held so much wisdom, knowledge and strength, they are the glue that ensured the family stayed in tact and they were beyond their time as far as the environment was concerned. Of course there were no recycling bins back then so they reused everything, every container was washed, scrubbed and stored for use at a later date. Ingredients were bought wisely and healthy economical meals were always available. Fruit and vegetables were washed and shined to remove pesticide residue, making each apple an event in itself, you have never seen apples so shiny as those that came from Nanna’s aprons.
This is the inspiration behind MommaGreen, wisdom that has been lost over the generations, the ability to use things again, to make multiple delicious meals out of economical ingredients, to create happy memories for children so that they continue to feel valued and loved even into adulthood, we value our role in your life as much as they valued theirs in ours.
So here we now stand as MommaGreen, Momma for the wonderful Mothers and Grandmothers in our lives and Green for all of the environmental wisdom that is passed from generation to generation.
With love, gratitude and wonderful memories
MommaGreen
